Monsters fall at Syracuse in shootout, 3-2 https://www.morningjournal.com/2024/01/13/monsters-fall-at-syracuse-in-shootout-3-2/ Sun, 14 Jan 2024 02:52:17 +0000 https://www.morningjournal.com/?p=813514&preview=true&preview_id=813514 Host Syracuse tied the game midway through the third period, then won the shootout after a scoreless overtime period to beat the Monsters, 3-2, on Jan. 13.

After Syracuse opened the scoring with a goal just over 5 minutes into the game, Cleveland’s Mikael Pyyhtia tied it at 1-1 with 11:38 remaining in the first period. He was assisted by Trey Fix-Wolansky and Hunter McKown.

Alex Whelan gave the Monsters a 2-1 lead 8:48 into the second period, assisted by Justin Pearson.

In the shootout, the teams were tied at 2-2 when the Monsters’ Cameron Butler was denied and Syracuse’s Waltteri Merelä converted in the fourth round for the difference-maker.

Cleveland has lost three of its past four and fell to 23-10-1-1. The Monsters will play their first home game in 13 days when Lehigh Valley visits Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse for the first of two straight nights beginning Jan. 19.

Cleveland will face the Texans at 4:30 p.m., Jan. 13 in Houston in an AFC wild-card game, the NFL announced Jan. 7 during “Sunday Night Football.” It’s the first game of a five-game wild-card slate Jan. 13 to Jan. 15.

The game will be televised locally on WKYC-TV 3. It is a rematch of a Christmas Eve game won by the Browns, 36-22.

The Browns enter at 11-6 following a Week 18 loss to the Bengals in which they rested most of their key players. The Texas are 10-7 and won the AFC South by beating the Colts, coupled with a Jacksonville loss to the Titans.

Woodrich (Beachwood) made two free throws with five seconds left in OT to ice it for the Vikings (11-6, 4-2 Horizon). CSU is 9-0 at home this season. The Vikings are in a three-way tie for second place in the HL, a half-game behind Fort Wayne.

Tristan Enaruna paced the Vikings with 24 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Woodrich added 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and Drew Lowder had 12.

Up next for CSU is a swing through Wisconsin, beginning Jan. 12 at Milwaukee.

Cleveland (22-9-1-0) outshot the Americans, 34-26, but could only muster a power-play goal by Owen Sillinger in the second period. The Monsters were 1-for-6 on power plays.

It was Sillinger’s sixth goal of the season. Carson Meyer and Trey Fix-Wolansky assisted.

The Americans scored the first goal of the game 5 minutes, 28 seconds into the first period. They scored twice in just over a minute in the second period for the final margin.

Jet Greaves made 23 saves in the Monsters’ net.

The teams meet again Jan. 6 in Rochester.
