To celebrate World Theater Day, March 27, the Outside Circle Theater Project (OCTP) is announcing its first playwriting contest, according to a news release.

With this contest, the Outside Circle Theater Project kicks off its first goal of staging one original piece per year, the release said.

The winning submission will receive a $250 cash prize and the group will produce and stage the winning play in October of this year, according to the release.

The writing contest runs from March 26 through April 17.

Entry is free and open to the public, according to the release.

The winning submission will be announced at a “Meet the Author” reception on April 27, the release said.

The Outside Circle Theater Project believes community theater goals should assist trending toward rather than away from, diversity, equity and inclusion, according to the release.

Project coordinators endeavor to educate and generate discussions about history, social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion through producing live
theater works that reflect the diverse voices of the Lorain County community, the release said.

The Outside Circle Theater Project is dedicated to supporting the art of storytelling for and by under-represented voices in the community, according to the release.

Advisory board member Carla Daniels Valles agrees.

“I want us to write our own content and it should be current … dealing with real issues,” Valles said in the release.

While Outside Circle Theater Project seeks to give local women and girls, a forum to express themselves in their own words in a safe, inclusive space, participation in any aspect of the group, is open to all ages, ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds, genders and nationality identities, according to the release.

The Outside Circle Theater Project is hosted by crowdfunding site IOBY (In Our Back Yard).
