The Lorain County Common Pleas Court has indicted a Michigan man for allegedly creating havoc during a standoff in which the man was shot by authorities as he attempted to drive out of an Elyria garage toward them.
Dorian Williams, 27, of Detroit, was attempting to evade law enforcement when he sustained a gunshot wound during a standoff Nov. 5, according to a search warrant filed in Common Pleas Court by Lorain Police Capt. Michael Failing.
Lorain Police conducted the investigation into the shooting due to the Elyria Police officer’s use of deadly force, the search warrant stated.
Williams was treated for his injuries and then released from the hospital and transported to the Lorain County Jail where he remains on a $1 million bond.
He was indicted on two counts of felonious assault, two counts carrying a concealed weapon; two counts having weapons while under disability; two counts improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle; two counts failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer; two counts vandalism and one count of assault, obstructing official business, receiving stolen property and fraudulent action concerning a vehicle identification number, all felony offenses, according to the indictment.
The indictment also includes a first-degree misdemeanor charge of failure to stop after an accident, the documents stated.
The indictment calls for the forfeiture of two Smith and Wesson firearms found in Williams’ possession.
At approximately 2:30 a.m., on Nov. 5 an Elyria Police officer on patrol in the area of East Broad Street and South Abbe Road heard a vehicle’s squealing tires and “what sounded like erratic driving,” the release stated.
The officer located a red Dodge in the parking lot of the Speedway at South Abbe Road and East Broad Street, the release stated.
While the officer was attempting to investigate if the driver was the suspect of the traffic infractions, Williams fled the scene with “the officer partially inside of the vehicle,” the release stated.
Williams fled southbound on South Abbe Road at a high rate of speed and then crashed into a residence on Chestnut Ridge Road, the release stated.
He fled and barricaded himself in a Carol Lane residence. Officers’ attempts to convince Williams to come out of the residence were met with resistance.
Williams then started a vehicle inside the closed garage at the Carol Lane residence and drove through the garage door, the release stated.
Officers fired at Williams as he was driving toward them, the release stated.
Officers rendered first aid to Williams at the scene,and he was transported to University Hospital Elyria Medical Center.
The officer who was dragged sustained minor injuries to his arm and knee. He was also transported to University Hospital Elyria Medical Center and treated and released, the release stated.
A court hearing has not yet been set in the case.
