The city of Oberlin Electric Department, also known as the Oberlin Municipal Light and Power System, is inviting the community to celebrate Public Power Week at an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 30, at 289 S. Professor St. in Oberlin, according to a news release.

The event is free and open to the public, the release said.

Public Power Week is an annual celebration organized nationally by the American Public Power Association.

Since the Oberlin Electric Department is a community-owned, not-for-profit electric utility, the open house will provide an opportunity for the community to learn more about its local electric utility as well as the benefits of public power in general, according to the release.

At the open house, staff at Oberlin Municipal Light and Power System will provide a cook-out for the community, guide tours of the power plant, offer demonstrations and giveaways, as well as host a raffle for a chance to win $100 Oberlin gift card, the release said.

Representatives from Efficiency Smart and Providing Oberlin With Efficiency Responsibly also will be on site to provide information on services and programs available to Oberlin residents to help save energy and lower energy costs, according to the release.

The city of Oberlin partners with both organizations to bring these important services to the community, the release said.
