While many people who go to the Lorain County Fair are entranced by the barns filled with farm animals, there’s more than just food and excitement going on for Lorain County Agricultural Society members.
And, the second day of the fair on Aug. 21 prompted three announcements.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Sammy Kershaw will not perform with Roots and Boots on Aug. 22 because he is on doctor’s orders for complete rest, officials said.
Kershaw is expected to make a full recovery and officials apologized for the inconvenience.
The second announcement was that the Lorain County Fair Opening Day Breakfast returned this year and took place in the old Grange cafeteria.
The Lorain County Township Association sponsored the breakfast.
The third announcement was the election of Lorain County Fair Board directors.
"There are 21 directors on the Fair Board who run for three-year terms," said Charisse Nikel, secretary of the board. "Each year, there are seven of them that are running for election, and it is these directors' jobs to organize the fair each year."
Each director is from Lorain County, and no more than two residents from each original township may serve on the board at any given time, Nikel said.

"The official mission of the Board of Directors for the Lorain County Fair is to enhance Lorain County through an annual celebration promoting agriculture, entertainment, education and encouraging positive youth development of leadership skills," she said. "In essence, they are the ones behind the scenes that bring the fair to fruition each year."
Voting for the directors occurs from 1 to 7 p.m., the first Monday of the fair at the Fair Office.
"In order to vote, you must be a member of the Lorain County Agricultural Society and be over the age of 21," Nikel said. "But the passes, which are $40, can be purchased from December to the day before voting, and they guarantee entry into the fair free for the entire week."
Those running for the 2023 election include Heath Baus of Amherst, Joe Buchs of Henrietta, Matt Hignett of Eaton, Trent (Dave) Hill of Camden, Steve Neff of Wellington, Craig Norton of Brighton and Scott Smith of Russia.
The new directors will be announced the morning of Aug. 22 and will serve until 2026.
