Lorain County Assistant Prosecutor Dan Petticord announced Aug. 21 that he’s thrown his hat into the ring to run for retiring Common Pleas Judge James Miraldi’s seat.
Petticord, a Sheffield Lake Democrat, first made his announcement at the Lorain County Fair Breakfast.
“I am excited to begin this journey and pursue this position which I believe I am highly qualified for and very capable of serving the community in,” said Petticord in a news release announcing his candidacy.
Petticord currently serves as the civil division chief prosecutor for the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office, where he has worked since 2011.
He also advises the Lorain County Commission Board as well.
Petticord was raised in Lorain and graduated from Admiral King High School, the release stated.
While in private practice as an attorney, Petticord handled a variety of civil litigation, including medical malpractice, insurance coverage cases, commercial litigation and aviation defense.
According to the release, Petticord believes the consistent and equitable application of law is essential for society.
“I believe that the role of a trial, or common pleas judge is critical to achieving this result,” he said in the release. “I believe now, as I have throughout my more than three decades in the practice of law, that being a judge is an awesome responsibility that should not be approached lightly.
“Furthermore, I am ready for this responsibility.”
The filing deadline for candidates to run in the presidential primary, tentatively scheduled for March is Dec. 20, or 90 days prior to the primary election, according to Dave Stambol, of the Lorain County Board of Elections.
The state hasn’t yet issued the exact dates, Stambol said.
