The Friends of the Ritter Public Library are preparing for their summer book sale event Aug. 23-26 at the library, 5680 Liberty Ave. in Vermilion.

“We will have a huge selection of DVDs and, of course, books with most items coming in at $1 or less,” said Chloe Browne, community engagement librarian for Ritter.

The Friends of the Ritter Public Library began these book sales a few years ago as a fundraising effort for the library.

In March of this year, the event became biannual and now occurs in early spring and late summer.

“The sale is really important for the community, because it is one of the most affordable places you can get quality books,” Browne said. “Plus, we have hundreds, if not thousands, of titles available with nothing over $5.”

The sale will take place from 3:30 until 7:30 p.m., Aug. 22, with refreshments and raffles for Friends of the Ritter Public Library members.

“You can join at the door during the event as well,” Browne said. “It is $5 for individual, $8 for a family and $25 for a business.”

The sale will open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Aug. 23 and 24. Bargain days are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Aug. 25, and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Aug. 26.

During bargain days, guests can fill a bag for a donation of their choice.

“Proceeds from the sale support the activities of the Friends, making it really important for us,” Browne said. “Not only are the funds used with a focus on library services, facilities and needs, but it also promotes the use and enjoyment of the library.”

The group always accept donations of books and DVDs, she said.

They can be dropped off in the donation slot in the returns area of the library.

“This is just a really great way to come out and support the library,” Browne said. “Not only are you helping us out, but you’re helping the community, too.”
