Outlook
Coming off of a winless season in Bill DiFucci’s first year, Vermilion looks to change things in 2023. The Sailors grew a lot last season despite the losses, and they’ve turned into more of a veteran group. After a good offseason, they put themselves in a position to make a large improvement.
Player to watch
Keegan Frey is Vermilion’s most productive returner from last season. He brings speed at wide receiver and will be the main target. Even more than that, he has emerged as a locker room leader. DiFucci said Frey is the heart of the program, and he’s the safe bet for a Sailor that will have a big season.
Underclassman to watch: Back again at quarterback, junior Aaron Mathis has transformed his body and looks in great shape heading into 2023. Playing on both sides of the ball at quarterback and defensive back, his presence will be known on the field. Vermilion wants to play two quarterbacks this season with him and Terrence Anders, and Mathis will stick out with his dual-threat ability.
Bottom line
IF: Vermilion’s returning players can take another leap, THEN: The Sailors will make a big improvement in 2023
