In baseball, sometimes it’s not one team’s day.
On June 22 against Schuamburg and the home series tied up one game apiece, the Lake Erie Crushers did not have their best outing, losing, 15-3.
The Crushers’ troubles started in the fourth inning, when they allowed five runs, which resulted from free bases on a walk, hit-by-pitch and two errors.
“(Schaumburg) capitalized on a couple of mistakes. There were too many free bases in one inning. They are a good team and took advantage,” Crushers Manager Jared Lemieux said.
The issue snowballed in the eighth an ninth innings, when the Boombers scored a combined nine runs.
Schaumburg's Kyle Fitzgerald swung with a golden touch to bat in six runs from three singles. He totaled four hits.
The Crushers trailed, 1-0 after the first inning. However, second baseman Kemuel Thomas-Rivera's two-RBI double temporarily changed the tide in the third inning.
Despite six hits, they struggled to score runs, as Schaumburg swiftly retired hitters. Former Crushers Aaron Glickstei (3-2) got his third win for four hits, two earned runs, three walks and four strikeouts.
"(Glickstei) did a good job of keeping people off-balanced," Lemieux said. "He worked at a quick pace, we didn't adjust (to it). You have to tip you cap. I thought their starter threw a great game."
The Crushers' leading hitter was first baseman Gabe Snyder, who was 2-fo-4. Jack Harris also got a hit and scored a run.
They have dropped three of their last five games, as they fell to 16-20. They are sixth in the West Frontier standings, tied with Joliet and Washington.
The Crushers will host their next games against the Slammers on June 22, which will be a series that will break the standing's tie for at least two teams.
"We have to go back to playing clean baseball. With errors, walks and hitting batters. If we can clean that up, we will be in the ball game," Lemieux said.
