A Lorain County man was stabbed multiple times by another man Oct. 2 at the Lorain County Jail.
Eddie Ortiz, 31, of Lorain, was charged with attempt to commit murder, a first-degree felony; felonious assault, a second-degree felony; illegal conveyance, a third-degree felony and possessing criminal tools, a fifth-degree felony, according to a news release from Lorain County Sheriff’s Office Detective Lt. Robert. Vansant Jr.
Ortiz is accused of stealing a pair of pliers from jail maintenance staff and stabbing fellow inmate with them after he reportedly sharpened the tool, according to Sheriff’s Office reports.
Ortiz was able to steal and hide a pair of needle nose pliers while maintenance personnel were in the pod working on a cell sink days prior, according to the release.
He was able to sharpen the tips of the pliers using the concrete surface, the release stated.
The victim told jail staff that he attempted to back away from Ortiz, and while doing so, he tripped and fell into a cell where Ortiz then reportedly stabbed him in the head, then the neck, according to a report about the incident.
Another inmate stepped in to stop the attack which led to the three men fighting and the victim getting stabbed allegedly by Ortiz in the lower abdomen, the report stated.
The victim was transported to a local hospital, which was not disclosed due to security reasons as well as his identity, the news release stated.
Ortiz was arraigned Oct. 4 in the Elyria Municipal Court, and his bond was set at $160,000, the release stated.
The victim’s current medical condition wasn’t released.
