Lorain City Council unanimously approved two resolutions Oct. 2 honoring two Lorain churches for their 100- and 150-year anniversaries at its meeting.

The first resolution was dedicated to honoring St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 309 W. Seventh St., for its 150th anniversary.

St. Mary’s celebration will begin with mass at 10 a.m., followed by a meal at 11:30, Oct. 15, at German’s Villa, 3330 Liberty Ave. in Vermilion, the resolution stated.

“Since St. Mary’s inception in 1873, St. Mary Catholic Church has provided its congregation with a purposeful life,” according to the resolution. “The Spirit of Love and friendship is visible among the parishioners and goes beyond into the community of Lorain.

“For 150 years, St. Mary’s Catholic Church has provided the community of Lorain with education, moral guidance and motivation to its members and community.”

St. Mary’s Catholic Church offers public outreach including monthly food pantry, education and social justice outreach as well as hosts shoe and blanket drives for those in need, the resolution stated.

Ward 2 Councilwoman Victoria Kempton presented the resolution to representatives of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

“Lorain City Council does hereby recognize, honor and celebrate the 150th anniversary of St. Mary’s Catholic Church,” according to the resolution.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 2000 Tower Blvd. of Lorain, will celebrate its 100th anniversary Oct. 13-15, with a centennial celebration weekend, according to the Council resolution, which was read at the meeting with church members present.

The celebration will conclude Oct. 15 with a divine liturgy followed by a celebration brunch, the document stated.

“St. Nicholas Church has been a pillar of strength, instantiating the spirit of Hellenism and the Christian faith and has made an indelible mark on the cultural tapestry of this city, sharing the beauty of Greek music, dance, art, and cuisine enriching the lives of all residents,” the resolution stated.

The resolution commended members of St. Nicholas for their boundless hospitality, embracing their neighbors with warmth and generosity, extending their hands in friendship, and exemplifying Christian good will, according to the resolution.

Ward 8 Councilman Joshua Thornsberry presented the resolution to representatives of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

“Lorain City Council does hereby celebrate and honor the 100th anniversary of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, recognizing its profound cultural contributions to our community and the embodiment of Christian goodwill that has touched the hearts of all who have crossed its threshold,” the resolution stated. “We commend the members and leadership of St. Nicholas for their enduring commitment to faith, culture, and community, and we look forward to another century of spiritual growth, cultural enrichment, and continued fellowship.”
