Sheffield Lake Fire Department has a new first vehicle to help to care for its community.

On May 10, the Fire Department took delivery of a new 2023 Freightliner, Life Line Type I ambulance, according to fire Chief David P. Novak.

Purchased in February 2022 and scheduled to be delivered in September, supply chain issues delayed the delivery, Novak told the Morning Journal.

The heavy-duty chassis will provide a longer service life as well as reduced maintenance costs compared to the Type III ambulance the Fire Department currently operates, he continued. Furthermore, the heavy-duty chassis will allow the Fire Department to carry additional equipment without overloading.

Other options include a Stryker power load cot system and upgraded LED lighting.

This new vehicle replaces the pre-owned 2008 Ford Life Line ambulance that was purchased in 2012, Novak said.

While awaiting delivery of the new ambulance, the older ambulance developed cost-prohibitive engine repairs and was removed from service, he said.

In order to keep a second ambulance in service, Pfund Superior Sales provided the city with an ambulance until delivery of the new one, Novak said.

“The Sheffield Lake Fire Department is grateful for the support of the community and administration for making such an investment,” the chief told the Morning Journal. “The new equipment will ensure the safety and comfort of our citizens. Patient care remains our top priority.”
