Elyria police officers seized 64 grams of methamphetamine May 10 from a Bellevue man during a traffic stop, according to a police report.
Paul Skiles, 65, came to officers’ attention after he’d fallen asleep in his sport utility vehicle at the Get Go Store, at 559 Midway Blvd., the report stated.
“Skiles was confused and incoherent” when the officers opened his vehicle door, the report stated.
The officers noticed Skiles showed signs of narcotic abuse and asked him to perform a series of field tests to determine his sobriety level.
Skiles told officers he had used cocaine approximately six hours before he was being interviewed, the report stated.
When officers searched the vehicle after placing Skiles under arrest for operating a motor vehicle while impaired, they discovered 64 grams of methamphetamine in various packages, stored in a bag, the report stated.
They also found “a quantity of loose methamphetamine laying” on the passenger seat, the report stated.
Due to the large amount of contraband seized, Skiles was charged with an elevated felony offense of trafficking in methamphetamine, a second-degree felony, and possession of methamphetamine, the report stated.
Skiles told police he purchased 2 ounces of methamphetamine for $400 from a man, named Jim, in Akron, the report stated.
At an Elyria Municipal Court hearing May 11, Skiles was given a bond of $62,500, according to Lorain County Jail records.
He remains in custody at the jail and is scheduled to appear in court May 17, records show.
