Guardians drop Cactus League opener, 4-3, to Reds

The Red’s Matt McClain hit a walk-off home run to give Cincinnati a 4-3 victory over the Guardians in a Cactus League opener on Feb. 25.

Left fielder Steven Kwan was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and third baseman Gabirle Arias also had two hits.

Cleveland starter Cal Quantrill went 1 1/3 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits. He walked on and struck out one.

DH David Fry hit a solo home run for the Guardians in the second inning.

Former Guardians prospect Will Benson, who was traded to the Reds in the offseason, had one hit and stole home for a run against his former team.

The game, which was the Guardians’ first with the new pitch clock, was played in 2 hours, 23 minutes.

The Guardians host Texas at 3:05 p.m., Feb. 26 at Goodyear Ballpark.
