The Amherst Public Library, 221 Spring St., is continuing their mission of spreading education this year as it introduces its history of holiday.

“A History of Christmas Holiday Music” starts at 7 p.m., Dec. 19, in the library’s community room.

Hosted by North Ridgeville’s Joel Keller, Ph.D., the event will provide an inside look at the holiday’s most well known Christmas carols, according to Becky Denes, public relations consultant for the library.

“We have had Dr. Keller here for various programs in the past, but this is the first time he has presented ‘A History of Christmas Holiday Music,'” Denes said.

This isn’t the first time Keller has done work in the music field.

He offers a variety of music and popular culture programs to libraries, senior citizen centers and other institutions.

The event is free and open to the public.

Registration is suggested but not required for the event.

To register, Denes asks that patrons go to the online calendar at the library’s website amherstpubliclibrary.org or call the library at 440-988-4230.

“Keller will discuss the history of music as a genre, tracing its early roots to the 20th century,” she said. “The program will be a multimedia presentation and will include examples of Christmas music from many eras.”

A synopsis on the event located on the library’s website from Keller explains that “Christmas music has been a seasonal staple for centuries with its earliest beginnings as chants, litanies and hymns intended for use during church liturgies. From there the first written carol appeared between 1350 to 1550.”

Keller will return to the library at 7 p.m., Feb. 16, with a program on the music of queen of soul Aretha Franklin.
