The union strike at Nordson Corporation in Amherst has reached its third day as 133 workers from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 1802 union continue to stand against the company’s “last, best and final” offer on a new work contract.
The contract which includes the continued practice of mandatory overtime and that members work a minimum of 32 Saturdays per year, with Sundays as an option, was overwhelmingly rejected by the union, Nov. 14.
Now, Nordson Corp has decided to move forward in another direction as the strike continues on. According to one worker, who asked to stay anonymous, “While the union is/was striking, salaried employees were instructed to work from home and did so.”
The worker continued on to say that the non-union workers were informed during the afternoon Nov. 15 that they were to report to work the next day. “We were told we would be assigned to different assembly cells/locations to do the assembly work that the striking union workers would be doing.”
For this worker, and a few others, this comes as a slap in the face for those striking for better compensation. Still no word yet has come out on a settlement reached and the strike is expected to continue on in the following days and weeks as the holiday season approaches.
