The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Sheffield Lake Police Department conducted an OVI checkpoint Oct. 21 in the city of Sheffield Lake.
The checkpoint was conducted on Lake Road.
It was manned by Sheffield Lake Police Department officers and Highway Patrol troopers from the Elyria Post.
During the hours the checkpoint was in operation, 72 vehicles passed through, and no cars were diverted to be further vetted, according to a news release.
The goal is not to inconvenience the motoring public by quickly letting vehicles pass through with minimal traffic interruptions, the release said.
The average amount of time a vehicle was stopped was fewer than 20 seconds, the release said.
“Based on provisional data, there were 652 OVI-related fatal crashes in which 720 people were killed last year in Ohio,” said Lt. Cliffton D. Dowell, commander of the Elyria Post, in the release. “State troopers make an average 25,000 OVI arrests each year in an attempt to combat these dangerous drivers.
“OVI checkpoints are designed to not only deter impaired driving but to proactively remove these dangerous drivers from our roadways.”
