Matthew P. Spears, 38, announced his candidacy after filing his petition with the Lorain County Board of Elections on Dec. 19 for the full-term seat commencing Jan. 3, 2025, according to a news release.

“I’m doing the right thing for the citizens of Lorain County and the first responders who need a voice in their corner,” said Spears, administrative assistant to Lorain County Commissioner Michelle Hung.

Spears has served Lorain County residents in his current position and said he wants to do so in a larger capacity as a county commissioner.

Spears “is a strong supporter of the rights of organized labor,” the release stated.

Spears holds a master of science in criminal justice administration, safety and security, and a bachelor of arts in public safety management with an emphasis in Homeland Security. He also has two professional development certificates from Lorain County Community College in public administration and in police science, the release stated.

Spears has 13 years experience in auxiliary law enforcement with an additional two years in federal service.

“I support the safety services, police, fire and EMS, all encompassing,” Spears said.

Spears said he understands that ensuring the safety, security and welfare of the residents of Lorain County is one of the primary responsibilities of county government, and decisions made by county officials should be based on the input and best interest of the residents they represent.

Spears “strongly believes there is no room for personal agendas in government, and it should operate on the concepts of ‘government of the people, by the people, and for the people’,” the release stated.
