The Elyria Council of Veterans will hold its annual ceremony at noon, Dec. 7, to honor and remember the 2,400 U.S. personnel lost during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
The public is encouraged to attend.
“The servicemen and civilians killed on Dec. 7, 1941, need to be remembered and their legacy passed on to our children and our children’s children,” said Lise Day, event planner and commander of American Legion Post 12 in a news release. “National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is observed each year on Dec. 7 so they will not be erased from our history books.”
The ceremony will take place on the Washington Street bridge in Elyria with Day leading the ceremonies.
Elyria High School Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AJROTC) will present the colors and lead the assembled in the Pledge of Allegiance, according to the release.
A short speech will be given by Elyria Council of Veterans commander David Root followed by a special wreath presentation, the release said.
A tradition with Pearl Harbor Day ceremonies is the pacing of a wreath in the water to memorialize the lives lost during the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
One of the AJROTC Cadets will perform that honor this year, the release said.
Several elected officials and special guests are expected to be in attendance.
The public is reminded to check the weather and dress appropriately for the 30-minute program.
