The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a quality program administered by the American College of Surgeons, has granted accredited status to the Mercy Health – Lorain Breast Cancer Program in Lorain confirming the high-quality, comprehensive and compassionate care delivered in Lorain County, according to a news release.

As a National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers-accredited center, the Mercy Health – Lorain Breast Cancer Program is committed to maintaining levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive, patient-centered, multidisciplinary care resulting in high-quality care for patients with breast disease, the release said.

Patients can be confident that their breast care team includes health care professionals from a variety of disciplines who are committed to working together to provide the best care available through their entire course of treatment, according to the release.

Also, patients receiving care at an National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers-accredited center will have access to information on clinical trials and new treatment options, genetic counseling, and patient-centered services including psychosocial support, rehabilitation services, and survivorship care, the release said.

“Mercy Health – Lorain and our breast cancer care program are committed to providing high-quality, compassionate cancer care close to home for our patients,” said Dr. Mita Patel, surgical breast oncologist and medical director of the Mercy Health – Lorain Breast Program, in the release. “This accreditation reaffirms that commitment and the care our patients have come to expect.

“From ultrasounds, MRIs, 3D mammograms and breast imaging to bone density scans, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, everything our patients need is conveniently available. Breast cancer is complex, and we know health outcomes can be improved when patients don’t have the added stress of traveling for treatment.”

As part of their accreditation process, National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers surveyors review each center’s commitment to leadership, clinical services, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.

Breast centers seeking National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers accreditation undergo a site visit every three years.

Accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers is granted only to those programs that are committed to providing the best possible care to patients with breast cancer, according to the release.
