With time winding down in Westlake’s showdown with Warrensville Heights, a play needed to be made on a fourth down on the 7-yard line.
In a shootout, on Sept. 1, the Demons’ defense came up with a late stop to halt the Tigers’ rally, 35-34.
“A year ago, I am not sure if we would have won that game. This year, we have a great group of seniors and a great group of leaders. It is nice to see them have that success,” Westlake Coach Jason Hall said.
The Demons’ special teams were big, especially kicker Sean Evilsizer, who made a 50-yard field goal to take a 35-34 lead with little time remaining.
“In practice, I tell the kids that we are either going to win or lose a game this year on special teams,” Hall said. “For that to hit home for them and hearing them talk about it (is great). It is still a learning experience for them, being in these situations. … It’s good to come out on top by hitting a long field goal.”
Warrensville Heights had enough time to drive down the field to the red zone, with a little help from the kick return. Added penalties drove it down the field with a chance to score. On fourth down, all-district defensive back Cooper Rummel came up with a deflection to seal the win.
Westlake’s start was ideal to lead, 22-6, at the end of the first quarter and, 28-14 at halftime, but Warrensville Heights cut the lead to 32-26 to start the fourth quarter.
The Demons’ offense continued to thrive. After posting back-to-back 40-point games in their first two weeks and 35 against Warrensville Heights, they’ve averaged over 40 points per game so far.
“I think that our offense is built around using the whole field and using multiple players,” Hall said. “When you look at our team, you obviously have to have an offensive line. We have been running the ball and when you are a balanced attack, it really opens up the passing game for Sam Bruccheiri and our receivers. (Running back) Matt Porcelli had over 150 yards rushing (against Warrensville Heights).”
Westlake remained undefeated at 3-0 and will play Normandy on Sept. 8.
