Throughout 2023, We Care We Share Ministries, 1888 E. 31st St. in Lorain, has received a few large donations this year to help Lorain in a variety of ways, according to Bill Cornish, food pantry director of We Care We Share.
We Care We Share carries a number of different services from providing food and clothes to Lorainites in need, to helping house young people aging out of foster care, Cornish said.
My House, the “aging out of foster care” program for We Care We Share, got quite a bit of help this year, he said.
“It helps a lot, mainly because we do not have a regular income stream,” Cornish said. “My House is our residential program for young people aging out of foster care or facing homelessness.
“We have four young people in there right now, and most of them have sponsoring agencies.”
The We Care We Share food pantry received a $5,000 grant this year from America’s Farmers Grow Communities, Cornish said.
The America’s Farmers program has donated nearly $65 million to organization around the United States since 2010, he said.
“Barb Ziegler, a longtime supporter of We Care, submitted the grant application on behalf of the ministry,” according to a news release from We car We Share. “According to America’s Farmers, each year more than $2.75 million is donated to organizations across the country.”
Chicks Against Hunger had a fundraiser in May and made a donation to We Care We Share’s causes, Cornish said.
With a May fundraiser that attracted about 100 attendees to the Shipyards, 500 Shipyard Way in Lorain, the group was able to provide over $6,000 in donations to the pantry.
“About 100 attendees donated 1,869 pounds of food and raised $6,515 for the ministry, which was used to purchase food and supplies,” Cornish said.
The annual Summer Market at Black River Landing, 421 Black River Lane in downtown Lorain, also donated $10,000 to We Care We Share’s residential program, he said.
“Girls Give Back, through its annual Summer Market at Black River Landing, donated $10,000 to We Care We Share for its residential program,” he said. “At the Summer Market, We Care and the Elyria-based Blessing House each received a generous donation in return for staffing the parking lots at Black River Landing during the event.”
The We Care We Share Ministries food pantry is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays.
