The property formerly the Golden Acres Nursing Home was transferred to the Lorain County Port Authority by the Lorain County commissioners at a commission meeting Aug. 25.

The approximate 30 acres, that include a river, is located at 45999 North Ridge Road in Amherst Township.

The commissioners and the County Port Authority have owned the property which had a building on it up until recently when it was demolished.

The County Port Authority owns the 4 acres that abuts state Route 58 while the commission owned the remaining acreage, according to county officials.

“It’s a beautiful piece of property,” said Commission President Dave Moore during the meeting.

The decision to raze the building instead of restoring it was made because the cost of bringing it up to current building codes wasn’t feasible. Moore said.

“It took us a very long time to clean up the property,” he said. “Nobody would touch 30 acres of land because of that building.”

Some developers were interested in the property, but ultimately walked away from it, Moore said.

Jim Miller, director of the Lorain County Port Authority, was in attendance at the meeting to speak on the transfer.

“The purpose of the port authority is to get the best use for the citizens of Lorain County, and that’s our goal in all of our projects,” Miller said. “And, that will be our goal on this property, also.”

The Lorain County Metro Parks has expressed an interest in the property, Moore said.

“Hopefully, you two can sit down and work something out for the community,” Moore told Miller in reference to the park service.

Commission Vice President Jeff Riddell and Commissioner Michelle Hung didn’t comment on the matter, but both voted in favor, along with Moore, to transfer it to the County Port Authority.

The commission board meets in regular session again at 5 p.m., Sept. 5, and 9:30 a.m., Sept. 8.
