The Firelands Local School District (FLSD) has announced that improvements have been made to its cross-county trail, thanks to a partnership with Canvus and the Mental Health, Addiction and Recovery Services (MHARS) Board of Lorain County, according to a news release.

“This partnership has created an opportunity for the adaptation of our cross-country trail into a health and wellness trail,” the release said. “Visitors will be able to walk this 1.5 mile trail and stop at sustainable benches that are equipped with QR codes.

“These QR codes provide information for mindfulness and/or athletic workouts.”

There will be a ribbon-cutting for the new wellness trail at 5:30 p.m., Aug. 29, at Firelands High School, 10521 Vermilion Road in South Amherst.

The ceremony will take place on the east side of the building, near the outdoor classroom, according to the release.

This ceremony celebrates the partnership of the community and district, the release said.

Firelands Local School District Superintendent Mike Von Gunten said in the release that he is thrilled to share this opportunity with all of the Firelands Falcons.

“Canvas has given us the opportunity to create a wellness trail by donating over $25,000 worth of new, sustainable additions to our campus,” Von Gunten said. “Our community will now have the opportunity to easily utilize a wellness trail, on our campus.”

Firelands Local Schools is a Purple Star recognized district that is made up of five consolidated communities, expands over 95 square miles, making the school the center of the community, the release said.
