For a first-year coach, getting the team’s first win is a big step for a growing program.

On Aug. 25, Midview earned the first win in Jack Armstrong’s coaching tenure in a 23-6 win over North Olmsted.

“I was super happy (for the team’s first win) and proud of the kids,” Armstrong said. “They put the foot on the gas for the entire game. That was huge, because we had a fast start to the game and we continued to put the foot on the gas until the clock hit zero. I was proud of the boys for putting forth their best effort for the entire game.”

The defense had a lot to consider for its matchup against North Olmsted, which features standout receiver Collin Willard. Willard departed the game early after a couple of plays. This was a week after his injury against North Ridgeville.

Nonetheless, the show went on, as Midview’s defense conceded six points.

“Defensively, we took away what (North Olmsted) was good at. I think that we had a really good scheme in. The kids did their job and flew to the ball,” Armstrong said.

Quarterback Ethan Elbert scored on the ground and through the air for Midview’s two touchdowns. He connected with wide receiver Dane West for a 47-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Kicker Chris Payne made three field goals.

Midview improved to 1-1, and seems to have confidence growing in the program. The Middies will square off against Elyria Catholic on Sept. 1.

“It’s about (the players) believing in themselves,” Armstrong said. “I think this win gives them the confidence to continue to have that mindset in believing one another and themselves. The sky is the limit when they start believing in that. I was happy with the big win and we have Midview going in the right direction.”
