• Clearview lost in heartbreaking fashion, 41-40, on the final play of the game Aug. 25 at Lakewood, as the Rangers scored on a 12-yard double-reverse pass to Avery Holt.

Holt’s point-after attempt was the game-winning point.

Ethan Lorenzana scored on a 1-yard run with 1 minute, 23 seconds remaining for a 38-34 lead. Cy Christensen then completed a two-point conversion on a shovel pass to Ayden Cruz to make it a six-point advantage.

Lakewood had a final chance for the victory and drove to the 12 with 5 seconds remaining, setting up the game-winning touchdown.

The Clippers led, 32-28, at the end of the third quarter but Lakewood answered with a touchdown to take a 34-32 lead.

Christensen also threw a 50-yard touchdown to Dominic Jackson, who also caught an 11-yard TD earlier in the game. Christensen also ran for a TD.

• Vermilion was hoping to win the Stillman Cup in football for the first time in 2013 but visiting Firelands had none of that and posted a 30-0 victory.

The win was the 10th straight in the series for Firelands, which had to move the game to Vermilion due to the storm that wreaked havoc through the area.

Collin Scott and Liam Varndell scored touchdowns to lead Firelands’ offensive attack.

• North Ridgeville improved to 2-0 with a 41-6 win over Valley Forge.

The Rangers led, 21-0, at halftime, and had two pick 6s, the last a 90-plus return by Cayden Reed.

• Jack Armstrong earned his first victory as Midview’s head coach as the Middies took care of North Olmsted, 23-6.

Chris Payne made three field goals for Midivew.

• Hayden Jarvis ran an interception back for a touchdown late in the third quarter and that was the difference against host Keystone in a 17-7 Cloverleaf victory.

The Wildcats led, 7-3, at halftime but couldn’t generate offense in the second half.

• Amherst was hoping to start the season 2-0 but visiting Buckeye turn the tables in a 28-13 victory.

The Comets got a 13-yard touchdown run by J.R. Bires.
