An Elyria man has been charged after crashing his vehicle into a residential yard in Elyria and refusing to get out when fire and police officials arrived.
On Aug. 21 at about 6:33 a.m., Elyria Police were called to the 100 block of Longford Avenue after Matthew Kokoski, 40, reportedly crashed his Nissan sedan which was facing southbound in the front yard and driveway of 138 Longford Ave, according to an Elyria Police report.
“Members of the Elyria Fire Department were yelling at Kokoski and instructing him to put the vehicle in park,” the report stated.
However, Kokoski refused and firefighters used a tool to break the left rear window of the vehicle in an attempt to gain access, the report stated. The fire and police personnel both attempted to unlock the vehicle through a back window, still without success.
The decision was made to break the window and the safety service members were able to unlock the doors, the report stated. A firefighter was then able to place the vehicle in park.
Police then wrestled him out of the car and onto the ground.
“Kokoski hit his head onto the ground multiple times while officers attempted to handcuff him,” the report also stated.
Kokoski was charged with assault on a police officer, a fourth-degree felony; and misdemeanor charges of obstructing official business, resisting arrest and failure to control, the report stated.
He was issued a summons at a medical center where he was treated for a medical condition, the report also noted.
