Elyria police are investigating after a 2-year-old girl who fell out of a two-story window June 18.

Officers responded at 7:31 p.m. to 138 Tedman Court for the girl who did not show any immediate signs of injury, according to Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino.

“Officers said she had no visible signs of injury, nor could paramedics see anything wrong,” Costantino said. “We’re very fortunate.”

The incident happened when the girl’s mother was in the shower, he said.

“She apparently thought the child’s father and cousin were watching the girl,” Costantino said. “The dad said he was in the back working on something, and the cousin saw the girl go upstairs and assumed she was with her mother.”

Costantino said the girl was taken to UH Elyria and appeared to be in good condition.

“She was talking and laughing, so it appears she will be okay, but they are going to take her to Rainbow’s [Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland] to make sure there are no injuries,” he said. “We are also working with Lorain County Children’s Service to find out what happened.”

Costantino said the issue could have been avoided if a screen was applied.

“It would be difficult for a child to remove a window screen,” he said. “Parents, with small children, should have them installed to prevent something like this.”
