A Lorain County poll worker is one of six in Ohio to win ‘Red Carpet Awards’ for dedication to running good elections. The
nominated Mary Butler, a precinct election official for almost 20 years. The honors were announced Oct. 30 by the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office.
Butler, a Democrat, has served as the voting location manager at the Lorain County Community College polling place. While supervising from her motorized wheelchair, Butler ensures every voter is treated fairly and promptly, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. Each election she serves with her husband, Robert, and two assist dogs, French Fry and Zoomba. Other winners came from Montgomery and Fairfield counties. It takes about 40,000 poll workers to manage polling places on any given election day in Ohio and the individuals being recognized are among the best who serve voters. ‘Ohio’s poll workers are on the front lines of democracy serving voters, helping to ensure it is easy to vote and hard to cheat,’ said Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted. ‘The individuals honored today are committed to that cause and serve as role models for other poll workers throughout the state.’ The Red Carpet Awards program is part of his ongoing work to aid Ohio’s 88 election boards with the recruitment, training and retention of good elections officials.
