An investigation is underway surrounding an Elyria police officer fatally shooting a dog at the 1100 block of Melvyn Lane Jan. 5 in Elyria.

The Elyria Police Department located a residence on Melvyn Lane where they found and arrested Donte Colbert, 21, around 10:50 p.m., on an outstanding warrant issued on two counts of felonious assault connected to a 2023 shooting in Elyria, a release stated.

After the arrest, a neighbor opened the front door to their house, where an unleashed pit bull came aggressively charging at officers, according to the release. An officer drew his service weapon in protection and discharged at the animal, fatally wounding it.

There were no other injuries reported, but the shooting remains under investigation and further information will be released as it proceeds.

Colbert was transported to Lorain County Jail and will be held without bond until his court appearance, said Lt. Bill Lantz.
